BACK FORWARD
NAMI — Butler is a local affiliate of the National Alliance of the Mentally Ill. There is also a Pennsylvania NAMI. As a matter of fact, NAMI has over 200,000 members nationwide. NAMI helps by providing support, education and advocacy for better services and treatment of the mentally ill and their families. SUPPORT We offer a local support group on the third Wednesday of every month. This group is free of charge, and everyone is invited. The support group is located at our offices at 140 North Elm Street in Butler. It runs from 7 PM — 9 PM. We know that when mental illness strikes a family, people are often overwhelmed. With that in mind, we are happy to offer a “mentor” to meet you at your first support group meeting, introduce you to other members and help you get started in the NAMI family. Call us at 724-431-0069 and arrange a mentor to meet and help you. EDUCATION We are happy to offer an array of brochures and other information free of charge to anyone who requests it. We also have a lending library, including books and videotapes. Family members can also access the Internet in our “Family Room” to learn more about their loved ones’ illness, medications, or treatment. Our Family to Family Education Course is also an excellent source of information for family members and other loved ones. The NAMI Family to Family Education Course is a week program for families of individuals with mental illness. The teachers are trained family members, and the course is designed and written by a family member who is a mental health professional. The course focuses on psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, panic and anxiety disorders and obsessive compulsive disorder. The Family to Family Education Course includes discussions on the treatment of these illnesses. It also provides knowledge and skills that family members need to cope more effectively. It teaches basic education and skill training along with things like self-care, emotional support and empowerment. People taking the course also learn about handling crises and relapses, communication techniques, problem solving, limit setting, stress reduction, medications, community services and supports and advocacy. The course is given free of charge and is designed for parents, siblings, adult children and spouses. ADVOCACY NAMI is always advocating on behalf of the mentally ill members of our community. We know the challenges that mentally ill people and their families face, and we are constantly working at educating the public in an effort to eradicate the stigma that has become part of mental illness. We now know that most mental illnesses have a biological cause, just like illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease. Mental illness is NOT the result of things such as bad parenting or lack of willpower. No one ever wants or deserves to be ill. NAMI — Butler also keep up with local, state and national legislative issues and changes in an attempt to help mentally ill consumers and their families. FACTS
